1st, U.S. is not a member nation. (that's NATO) And the biggest disadvantage is France and sometimes Germany. God-damn Jacue Chirac! I hate him...
The E.U. is not a military organization like NATO. It is one based on economic issues only.
It was actaully formed to counter the economic super-power of the U.S. So that in of it self is a disadvantage to us (assuming you are an American)
However, there have been some real disadvantages to member countries such as Great Britain and other large farming countries. In the past few years the EU farming subsidies have undergone some serious changes resulting in major fleecing of money. In Great Britain, if you apply you can get money from the EU for having a half achre of land, whether you farm it or not!
