What makes hands so intimate?

What is it about the body part hands that is so intimate? Notice it is possible to have sex with someone you barely know, but you would never hold hands with them out of no where. Also, touching the hands of a friend, etc. (someone you are not relatied to romantically) is a but strange. So what makes hands so intimate; why is hand to hand contact reserved for only intimate couples?

holding hands is very intimate due to the comming together of two people, if you get close enough to hold hands you are in each others air space and therefore accepting each other.
the shaking of hands to a stranger takes place at a discreet distance but the shaking of hands of a good friend normaly follows on with a close hug or a cuddle.
Its a very nice way of invinting someone to be close to you, teenagers feel good when holding the hands of there loved one it makes them feel sort of joined together and is a sign of acceptance for each other.

I have two possible answers as to why hand holding is so intimate. One reason relates to the innocence of youth, before any of us got into the serious makeout sessions or actually having sex, holding hands is usually where our budding romances began. It is the purity of the young child in us that makes hand holding so significant and not to be shared with just anyone. Next, hand holding is a public display of affection and a sign that tells the world that you belong to each other. Sordid one night stands, as fun as they may be, is hidden and out of sight. It may become a story you tell your friends but it is not something you want to tell the world.

Because holding hands means there's a connection. I know a lot of people that have sex with someone and forget about them the next day because there's no connection. Holding hands is a way to get that person closer to you.
