This is too easy. Go to the library and read about collectibles.

I think, over time, you'd learn something from rare books such as their longevity from the paper, the fonts, the publisher, etc. and they're a wonder to re-read them and keep them in a safe place. I remember buying a hardback, it's biography of Peter the Great (Russia), from a thrift shop in Australia during my visit there in 1999, it's published in 1897 (or 1898, I'm not sure since I answer your question without the book nearby). Thus, whenever I pick it up for reading or for a look, it reminds me of the visit to the shop and the lady who sold me the book and was happy chatting with me about her children.
There're some of mine I bought once in a while and I don't mean to sell them later. They're part of my life, each had its own story with my fond memories.

Either find a rare bookseller to apprentice yourself to or go to the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov and post your question there.
