Heck, I live in Shanghai and there are 9 million bicycles just on my street alone. Everyone here rides bicycles. The weird thing is that mothers carry their babies on the back of bicycles and I see the babies falling asleep hanging on to their mothers, their little heads bobbing up and down trying not to fall asleep. And they aren't in baby seats, just hanging off the rack on the back fender. Nobody wears helmets here either.

That sounds like a small estimate for the number of bikes there. There are 10s of millions of people living in Bejing, right? Seems like there would be more bikes than a mere 9 million.

Hmm... I went to Beijing earlier this year and I was told since China's economy is growing so rapidly and it's citizens getting more rich, more of em are buying cars. As if the roads weren't already filled with them.

I would hit 4-5 people the first day of driving in Beijing... scary.

This city has a population of around 15-20 million (more if you count the migrant workers and non registered residents) and although not everyone has a bike now there are still well over 9,000,000 bikes

There were exactly nine million bicycles in Beijing when Katie Melua first sang the song. However, since then the number has substantially declined.
