ok why is it that it seems to be a natural human instinct to be afraid of underground places. i.e. Caves, crawlspaces, basements. Why is it that even if someone has been in their basement 1000 times they are still afraid to go down there at without a light on. or why is it that alot of horror movies are set underground? i.e The Cave. There seems to me to be a link between underground and fear but what is it?

Blame Hollywood for that. They created Wolfman just to name a few.

Lots o' reasons, we are buried underground, hell is supposedly underneath us and it is an uncharted and unfamiliar territory to most of us.
As far as being afraid of the basement, it is a place where we are usually alone and alot of people are afraid of that not to mention if someone is stalking us they will wait out in a place where they can have a better chance of catching us alone. Same as a cave but even better because our chances of summoning help are even slimmer. Boo!
