Well, it doesn't occur at night. It occurs when both the moon and the sun are above your horizon, otherwise, you can't see it.
A new moon happens when the earth and the sun are on opposite sides of the moon. Remember, the moon doesn't generate its own light--it only reflects the light of the sun. For the moon to block out the sun, it has to be between the earth and the sun. When it's in that position, the reflective side of the moon is reflecting the light of the sun away from the earth.
Also, new moon is when the moon and the sun rise and set at about the same time.
Full moon is when the moon rises about the time the sun is setting and sets when the sun is rising.

Because this is the point where the moon is in between the earth and the sun. A solar eclipse occurs when the sun blocks some of the light from the sun on a certain region of the earth.

the new moon is between us and the sun. that is why we don't see the side the sun is shining on. A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks our view of the sun by getting between us and the sun. . ( by rights you should not be saying new moon night because we would not see the sun at night so solar eclipses are just a daytime event.)

that's a lunar eclipse. they happen about every six lunar cycles (the new moon). the earth is between the sun and the moon causing sunlight not to reflect, hence it being dark. Most new moons are not in exact alignment to be considered eclipses during every cycle.
a solar eclipse is when the moon is between the sun and earth.
