Alvin's age is five times as Ralph's. If 10 is added to Ralph and 10 is subtracted from Alvin, their ages will then be equal. How old is each now?

Alvin's age is 25 and Ralph's 5. The two equations necessary to solve the problem are:

A=Alvin's Age
R=Ralph's Age

A = 5R
A-10=R+10

Put the two equations together

5R-10=R+10 and figure it out from there.

Good luck...

Yes! I can. Ralph is 5 and Alvin is 25. 25 minus 10 = 15 and 5 plus 10 =15. There's no real mathematical way to solve this, or at least none that i know of. It's just simple guess and check.

ralph = x (let)
alvin = 5x
given x + 10 = 5x - 10
so 4x = 20
x = 5 ie ralph = 5
alvin = 5x = 5*5=25

A=Alvin, R=Ralph

A=5R

R+10=A-10, then you subsitute A with 5R ...

R+10=5R-10 <== solve for R, Ralph's age.

R-5R=-10-10
-4R= -20 R=5 <== to find Alvin's age, subsitute R=5 to the original equation A=5R... A=5(5)=25

So... Ralph is 5. Alvin is 25.

a=5r
a-10=r+10

so you basically can substitute

a-10=r+10
5r-10=r+10
4r=20
r=5 Ralph is 5 years old.

Substitute back into one of the original problems.

a=5r
a=5(5)
a=25
Alvin is 25 years old.

it fairly is a simultaneous equation situation. enable x: grownup, y: toddlers x+y=one hundred (a million) 50x+30y=3180 (2) could desire to sparkling up the above 2 equations. Rearranging the 1st one: x=one hundred-y (3) changing equation (3) in (2): 50(one hundred-y)+30y=3180 (4) Simplifying (4) provides: 5000-50y+30y=3180 and it fairly is comparable to -20y=-1820 y=-1820/-20=ninety one changing y in (3) provides x=one hundred-ninety one=9 for this reason, no. of grownup is 9 and no. of young ones is ninety one.
