Well, when it comes to the opposite sex, we're already subconsiously judging whether we'd want them as our mate or not. Seriously. We look at them and try to figure out what we want in a mate. (Note: the more naturally symmetrical the face, the more we likey.) When we look at fellow ppl of the same sex, we're trying to compare ourselves w/ them. Like, we look at them and even though we might say, "Oh, she's SO ugly/slutty/stupid," we might actually be thinking, "Why the hell can't I be as skinny as her/have breasts like her's/have hair like her's." It's our way of judging the "competition." We look at them and then try to figure out how to look more attractive than them so that we can win a guy for ourselves. It's a natural thing that continues on for the rest of our lives. Only diff. between teen and adult is that adults keep quieter about these things sumtimes. But trust me, the thoughts dont change much. Even an 80-year-old still judges looks sumtimes. Scientists say that looks give a hint of the person's DNA and immune system and we tend to be more attracted to those whose immune system is diff. from us b/c we want our kids to have a better chance of survival or sumthing. W/e. It's life, just go w/ the flow.

Its actually not true at all.
But most all teens and preteens think its true, which is why they obsess about it so much.
Everyone out there has their own tastes and feelings. Some people like brown hair, some red. Some people like skinny boys, some like chunky girls. These preferences don't magically start when they turn 20, they are always there. Preteens and teens often try however to look like something they are not (well maybe everyone under 40), and therefore confuse the issues.
I know a 5th grade girl who has a crush on a young man who is undeniably the biggest, dumbest, ox of a 5th grade boy you can imagine. The boy is made fun of, and is not cool, but she likes him.
There is always somebody for everyone and it starts long before preteen, so don't add to the problem by obsessing on looks yourself.
