I have never used bare minerals, but I looked into the product when I made the switch from liquid foundation to mineral products.
I chose to go with a different product (Everyday Minerals). Bare minerals has too many ingredients, which includes one particular ingredient, Bismuth Oxychloride, that is not good for your skin. It is a heavy by-product of lead and copper refining. Do you really want to be putting that on your face? It clogs pores and can irritate the skin. The reason why many people switch to mineral makeup is to avoid all of that!
Some people really like it, but you can better coverage with a more natural mineral product for a better price. The mineral veil also has a bunch fillers, like cornstarch and rice powder, which are also bad for your skin.
You should try Everyday Minerals (you can get a free sample kit), SheerMiracle, Mineral Silk (90 day money back guarantee) or Cat Murphy. These are just a few of the brands that use about four ingredients in their products with no fillers or bismuth oxychloride.

Bare Minerals is the best I've ever used. My acne has really receded.
They show you how to apply the make-up with a lot of steps, but it's totally up to you. Personally, I just cover up my problem spots with the targeting brush and carefully apply some of the bronzer (which is fantastic).
Application is about five minutes, it lasts all day -- through humidity, sweat, etc. -- does not cake (if you put it on in small quantities), and it washes off easily. It doesn't produce much oil and you don't feel nasty.
Rather expensive, but the quality of the product pays you back.
It lasts LONG! I bought my kit at around last November/December, and I could still use it for another year.
I must admit, for the first few times you're getting the hang of it, you may make a mess with the powder. After a few experiments, the mess can be easily eliminated.

Personally, I think Bare Minerals is too messy. Loose powder and I do not get along. The price was another problem for me. I tried the Physician's Formula Mineral Wear Line and found that their compact is just as good. Check it out www.physicianformula.com
Makeup counter drag queens are out to make a commission, so don't bother asking their opinion. It's your face and you have to feel comfortable in it. If you want to play with colors go to Cover Girl's web site. They have a virtual model screen where you can set it up to match your complexion, etc. It's a very handy thing to have.

I love mineral cosmetics.
But beware what company/product your using. Pure mineral cosmetics are hard to find. Products from the drugstore/department store brands that claim they're mineral cosmetics contain so many fillers and things your skin doesn't need that you're just wasting money.
I love Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics. Absolutely the best coverage I've ever found in a foundation is the primary reason I love this brand. They go on sheer, but cover so well that you won't even need concealer again. And they're absolutely pure...no talc, no chemicals, purely non-comodegenic!!
Always learn the ingredients of mineral cosmetics before you buy.

Neutrogena Mineral Sheers is a good mineral makeup to try if you haven't done mineral makeups before. It is relatively inexpensive and I find it covers better than Bare Minerals and Bare Escentuals.

I use mineral makeup and I just love it! I purchase mine through SheerCover you can go to their website as well here is the link: www.sheercover.com
The foundations are wonderful, I don't see much difference in their eyeliner, mascara though, or blotting papers (wouldn't purchase it again at the price they have it). The cleanser, toner, and moisturizer are ok, but I prefer other products by Oil Of Olay personally. I have not tried their lip-covers yet. I enjoy the Lip-To-Lid Highlighter, Base Perfecter, Refreshing face Mist, the brushes are fabulous. Also, their billing is easy and the products really last a very long time. I share mine with my daughter and I still make it to the next delivery time - I have mine automatically delivered every three months. Best of luck to you, 2-Feathers

I love bare escentuals. I never wore make up for years because i found it dried out my skin or made it blotchy (I have very sensitive skin. I found Bare Escentuals when I was in Toronto in February and it not only evened out my skin tone, it calms my skin (because it has an SPF 15 in it), feels and looks very natural. Of course you have to know how to apply it... but practice makes perfect.

How timely your question is. I never wear foundation and I went to try Bare Essentual (sp?) b/c I heard it felt light and had invisible coverage. Boy, what a crock. As far as foundation goes, it was fine, but it didn't look natural to me. Plus, I found all the blending of the darker and lighter shades of your color pallet fussy. I think if you use foundation now, it is probably fine. But if this is your first go at foundation, it will feel mask-like and heavy.

I've tried the loose powder. It's actually pretty good stuff. Just don't get too much on the brush or you'll get it all over your clothes as well. :-)
