Good lord. Okay, first things first: If anyone posts specific recommendations in reply to your question, do me a favor -- before you go try to write about them, make sure YOU find them interesting.
And that brings me to a critical part of your question: the word "interesting." You see, that word is darned subjective. I'm interested in water policies, capital gains taxes, and scientific debates over the nature of dark energy. If I had to bet, none of these would float your boat.
So here's my first hint: Throw out the word "controversial." Instead, focus on the word "issue." (All issues are controversial by definition, but focusing too much on the word "controversial" will choke off your thinking process, because you'll keep looking for something "bigger.")
Next suggestion: Start listing things that you care about on a small and local scale. Think about city and community issues, or school issues. Keep going until you come up with something that YOU find interesting.
At which point, you will have answered your own question.

Avoid religion at all costs. You could promote tolerance and acceptance among all people. The patriot act, urging people to get involved. The list is almost endless. just look under government, culture, social sections on Y!A.

Religion. Politics. Abortion. Suicide. There's millions of them. Anything can be controversial in the wrong hands.

Whatever you feel the most strongly about....
Maybe: lowering the drinking age, affirmative action, prayer in schools, gun control or even eliminating the penny
