The United states bought the canal rights in 1899, for $40 million.
The U.S. and the new state of Panama signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla agreement, by which the U.S. guarranteed Panama a perpetual lease on a 10 mile stretch of the canal. This strip is known as The Canal Zone. U.S. paid Panama compensation of £10 million and an annuity of $250,000 starting in 1913. Does this answer your question.?
