Who remembers those early mornings, because of the time difference, getting up to watch Mitchell - the greatest fighter South Africa ever produced - make his record 12 defenses of the WBA jr. lightweight title?

jack daniels - we all used to congregate at Cafe Wien to watch him. They had a big screen TV and MNet used to show all his fights.

robsnor - I remember baronet. Met him once. He got killed by Kenny Vice.
Remember when he got spanked by Arthur Mayisela? Another terrific South African fighter.

Porgie - Baby Jake Matlala was a good fighter in his own right, but nowhere near as good as Mitchell, pound for pound.

Mitchell was South African boxings' savior in the 80's.
When the WBA fell in step with the rest of the sporting world and barred South African fighters from their rankings, Mitchell was their worst nightmare. He was their world champion in the 130 pound division, so they couldn't just strip him of the title, and he held onto that crown for five years and twelve defenses.
SA has produced some great boxing talent (who remembers Sugarboy Malinga?), but Brian Mitchell is hands down the best.

I loved getting up in the mornings to watch Brian Mitchell with my dad and my uncles. My dad wasn't a fan but my uncles persuaded him to watch. And they would get up real early, walk over and get the coffee going. These guys are drinkers and my dad doesn't touch the stuff, but they respected him and drank coffee in front of him. But when he turned his back, it was a different story!

The reason why I remember it is because my uncles used to keep brandy in the shed (we used to have one of those) and I was the guy who get the shots every now and again. My reward? A cigarette. So, I guess it must have them that led me down the wrong path!

What do you think of Baby Jakes taking on Mitchell if they were in the same weight class and of course the same age group? Both great fighters. But who would have been the better fighter? If in the same division, I would still put my money on Mitchell. Baby Jakes seems to be more recognized than Mitchell...why is that?
Didn't it take Baby Jakes longer to become a champion? Maybe I should post that as a question.

When speaking/hearing about Brian Mitchell I always think of Brian Baronet. Who remembers him. I think he would have been in the same if not better league if it was not for his untimely death.

The ultimate road warrior, watched the jon-jon molina fight in puerto rico and saw him get stuffed up in his own back yard, also saw the two fights Brian had against Tony the Tiger , yes he was the man no doubt about it.
