during the reign of king james in england, he and the pope had a misunderstanding. back in those days mass was done in latin and all of the bibles were in latin. the peoples of the time had to rely on what the priests read to them and take them at their word. since james and whatever pope it was were vying for power, james had the bible translated into english and made sure it was somewhat easily available. it was a bid to strip the cathloic church of some of its power.
