Whatever you do make sure that you LOVE the kind of work you are in.I feel so bad for the people that have to go to work day after day and are miserable with their jobs. If you plan on managing alot of people remmember that the nicer you are to them the more they will want to work for you.

There are no hard and fast rules. The list is quite long and it is mostly a combination of all the rules and common sense that will make a good manager.
> Positive mental attitude - it is the most important thing.
> Appreciate when it is due - not necessarily only ur seniors, but also the last man down the line.
> Practice what u preach - u have to set the example
> Be Humane - this is the most important thing. Take a humanitarian look on any situation and not by the book if u can help it.
I think this is the basic required to be a good manager. Besides this, listen to ur intuition. It helps...
All the best...

Read "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" then read "The 8th Habit". These books have been written by one of the worlds most highly regarded individuals, Stephen R. Covey.
Keep this key thought
You manage things - You lead people. Leadership is given to you by earning respect. With the respect of others you will find it easier to manage things.
Learn as much as you can and teach others. To manage things, you supply the support for individuals that are responsible for attaining the common goal of the managed item.
You should be able to find the books or cd's at your local library.
Best of Luck,
Bird Dog

to be a good manager is to have a good balance between the upper management, following their guidelines for operations, and rules............and being fair to the employees that you are in charge of.....
the work must be done of course, and you do not have to be their best buddy, and to receive their respect [and good work from them] you should set standards that are fair and possible for your employees to complete in a timely manner] one should give respect to each employee...understanding and patience is also a very good thing for your employees.....also voicing praise for excellent achievement is good...........have a meeting with all employees as a group, and brain storm, some employees might have a good idea to better the company so listening is a good thing also

practise doesn't enter into it you have to have work experience in whatever you choose as your profession and gradually work you way up to your aim and once there always have thought for the ones behind you doing the same thing and always be tolerant and be sure you always make the right decision especially where people are involved and you wont go far wrong

Have rules/standards and stick to them no matter how hard sometimes. Be fair, be approachable, be fun, be understanding, smile, set a good example.. dont expect something you cant or wouldn't do yourself. Always be available (in working hours!!) to your staff and your bosses.Always take on board the opinions and ideas of your staff.

Remember your roots. Identify with your subordinates whilst at the same time confirming that your role is to manage them. Earn their respect and maintain honesty and fairness in everything you do.
You won't go far wrong.
