Both can make you really rich. It just depends were you stand. Are you putting resistors on a chip or are you setting the goal for the item like how many MBs its going to have if its ram or if we are talking about the L2 on a processor.
Same with the software. With either your going to need to know some program skills with hardware you might also need to know electricity and circuits as well.

Software, you can sell it for $150 a pop,then patch all the security flaws and bugs that were not in the Final Release,after 5 years you can Retire the software and release a newer better version.
Hardware breaks, replace it. Manufacturing costs of Hardware=s ALOTTA $, get 25 Programmers to wite a software program, fire them, make 65 milllion CDs. your RICH!

You should just sell your ego! j/k What software have you ALREADY developed or do you still need to take classes? As for hardware, what ideas do you have that could make an impact on the computing masses? You either can or you can't. You either will or you won't! good luck :-)
