If the family member's blood type or RH factor does not match another's, a blood transfusion would kill him/her. The blood type and RH factor have to match to be a donor, unless the donor is Type O-. I donate blood all the time to the local blood bank because I am a Type O+ blood type. My family members are not Type O+, but as far as I know their RH factor is the same, so I could donate to them. My husband is A+, as is my son.
They could only donate to other people with A+ or AB+ blood types. They cannot donate to me. I can only receive O+ or O- blood. People with AB+ blood can receive from O+, A+ B+ and AB+ donors, as well as O-, A-, B- and AB-. People with AB+ blood are called the unversal receivers, just as people with O- are universal donors. They may only receive O- blood.
