It is THE foundation for ALL learning. Without history, there is no education period. 1+1=2 or does it? All rules, conclusions, theroies are worthless if you don't know how we came to where we are. We don't need to repeat every bit of learning from the ground up because OF history. The saying is "Those who fail to learn from history are DOOMED to repeat it." It is the lack of sufficient study of History that has this world in the mess it is in.

With history we don't just see EVENTS we get to see PATTERNS. If we are educated and insightful enough we can recognize the same human, government, social patterns that lead to trouble or success we can react accordingly. Human nature has changed very little over time, so we can learn a lot about today by studying yesterday.

Also, with true study of history we are able to see through the lies and manipulations made about it. People place blame, responsibility, or reasons on the past and if you do not KNOW your history you are easily manipulated. This is one thing the Internet CAN NOT help you with. If you look up every answer every time you have a question and don't really KNOW the answer you are at the mercy of whomever wrote the latest web data. If you have your own history of studying history you are not so easily duped.

History is in only second in importance to communications when it comes to education. If you know history and are an exceptional communicator you can shine in ANY other path of study. Everyone seems to want to cheat these days. Have a magic pill and have someone else hand out all the easy answers. History and communication are foundations for learning that must be in place every bit as much as the foundation for a home. JMO...

To understand anything about the persent and the future you need to know history. History can be valuable not only future historians - but also to future diplomats, lawyers and many many other professions. Besides - makes you a more informed and interesting person when you have opinions in part derived from the lessons of the past.

Because we (hopefully, but not always) learn from our past. Yes, it's the sense of belonging in our own American society, but it's also a huge lesson when you look at the history of people are the world like the Romans, the Persians, the Greeks and many others. History is invaluable and extraordinarily interesting.

I hated history in school too so I never paid attention and learned things just long enough to pass the tests. Now, I wish I had really paid attention. I would have such a better understanding of everything going on in the world right now if I had a better understanding of history and how we got here.

I really want to know too...I hate AP European History....history is so boring to me...and I thought people said to not "dwell in the past"...I think people should really focus on the present and future. The past is history so we can't change it...I guess we use it as a means to not make the same mistakes in the future as we did in the past..

because knowing your country's history gives you a sense of identity; for your country as a group of people and yourself as part of that group. As a group of people, you went through the same things, unlike people who aren't part of your history. And that sets you apart from other people with different histories.
