Yes - I forget the brand name but if I penetrated too soon after the spermicide tablet had been inserted and before it had time to dissolve it burned the hell out of me.

if he is sensitive to the ingredients yes; try a different brand. While most use the same basic ingredient to kill sperm, the other ingredients can vary.
