American Dialects....

I would assume that it would be teaching about the different dialects that exist through out the USA - such as the differenct between Pittsburghese and Southern Drawl. I wouldn't know what kind of assignments the teacher would give, as each teacher is different. The only advice I could give is if you are interested in that kind of study, take the class and if it isn't what you are looking for - there is always an add/drop period after classes start and you can drop it. Good luck.

a dialect is local words or accent...ie....in the south "y all" or "fixin to" is an example of a dialect. Another example is in some parts of the country you buy a soft drink, in others it is soda, in others it is Coke, even it is Pepsi or Dr. Pepper. We all speak the same language but there are many idiosyncracies that are local. Could also get into pronunciation. People in NYC tend to talk faster than in CA or the South. In Boston they drop the r, they "pahk the cah." There are tons of examples, but hopefully that gives you a little insight.
