It's not so much the popcorn as it is the idea of going to the cinema, the excitement of going to see a great film with friends, the popcorn just adds to the whole cinema experience.

I think because it's easy to enjoy whether you are alone or with someone else. If you have choccolate bar, for example, then it's a bit bugging to share with other. Since watching movies is one of popular dating place then you got to consider snacks that are easy to enjoy yet easy to share. Also, because at the time cinema was invented, popcorn was the only popular snack that they knew. So, here the popularity of popcorn continues.

In 1885, the first popcorn “machine” was invented. Until then, poppers were made to sit in front of stores to attract attention. But vendors wanted to be close to the crowds — especially the crowds near movie theaters. So poppers were made that could be pushed on foot, pulled by horse or mounted on trucks. Popcorn was very popular from the 1890s until the Great Depression. Street vendors used to follow crowds around, pushing steam- or gas-powered poppers through fairs, parks and expositions

No sure why its so popular. However, it is the most profitable product ever. By the time its sold to us as popcorn, the markup of profit is about 3000 per cent. Makes crack cheap by comparison.

Interesting... I never really stopped to think about that; not only is popcorn tasteless, the kernels get stuck in your teeth. :( I expect it's some kind of tradition to feed movie-viewers styrofoam. :P

that's low-fee to make and that they might sell it at an superior fee. that's undemanding and rapid to make, and can be made via any spotty teen that works on the cinema. that's virtually fats loose and can be flavoured in any form of fatty and attractive toppings.

Because it is cheap to make and high profit margin it also takes ages to eat, it also distracts you if the film is rubbish by throwing it about (boy it was great to be a kid!!)
