I know this is revoluntionary, but, WHY CAN'T EMPLOYERS PAY THESE WORKERS A FAIR WAGE? I seems that restaurant workers are almost begging for a paycheck. Anytime I eat out, and I even mean a drink at the Sonic, I tip the person who brings my food. I tip the girl who delivers my newspaper and the man who tends my lawn.
But, it is time the food industry takes responsiblility for all the people who make their business successfull. Have you gotten bad service with good food? Probably didn't go back. Gotten not so good food but great service? Probably willing to take a second chance.

I used to work at a restaurant that had curbside/takeout, and it was very nice when I received a tip. There is a lot more to it I think, than most people realize. When the kitchen sees a togo order, they don't give it as high a priority, so the tables always get their food first. This leaves the take out person with no option but to wait for your food, and have to check like every minute to see if it's ready, check the order, make sure that it's packaged correctly, make sure that you receive all of the goodies that come with it, and bag it up properly. This doesn't sound very hard, but you also have to realize that the togo person often gets stuck with helping other servers, answering the phone, and generally filling in the cracks for the whole restaurant. Again that doesn't sound too hard either. but when you add all of these elements together, and then throw in 10 togo orders at the same time, it can get pretty hectic. If I knew that I was gonna get a tip from you, I would probably try a little harder to be on top of your order, and you wouldn't have to wait for your order to get ready.

It is my understanding that most chain places including applebees and outback have a policy like this: when the order is called in, a server keys it into the micros system and is responsible for taking the money. Take out orders are including in their nightly tabulations. At places that don't have a 'pool tipping' policy, management automatically takes 12% of the total bills for the night, and taxes your tips based on that. So your carryout server is essentially penalized as far as taxes go, but most servers understand that the tips they would recieve bringing your dinner to your car would not rival the tip they would recieve after giving full table service to a customer. Most servers would probably appreciate any gratuity at all to offset the taxes. In a nutshell, do offer your server a few bux and a thank you!

Is they person polite, courteous, and providing a service to you? Then, you should tip.....If you are sitting in your car and they are leaving the building to deliver your order to your car, so you are able to avoid the rain or heat or the walk, then they have done you a service... People frequently forget the entire reason that we go somewhere else to eat is to avoid the preparation and cleaning issues that accompany buying, preparing and serving a meal. We are asking someone else to shoulder that responsibility, and that they do it well and cheerfully should always be rewarded, even if it's only in a small way.

You don't have to tip for take out order but you could spurge on a few dollar than why not. If you are a regular at a certain restaurant believe me the staff are aware of it and will take good care of your food. I worked at a restaurant and Know which customer tip when they pick up their food. I make close attention to their order and take real good care of them.

Yes, you should tip, because the employees don't make much of an hourly rate, they depend on your tips. If you do the curbside pickup you should know that they depend on your tip to pay their bills. You don't have to tip as much as you would if you sat down and got service, but a couple of dollars wouldn't hurt you, and would really help the person who took their time to make sure you got everything you ordered.

yes because the person taking your order is usualy a server, host or bartender. and when you order to go you are taking away time from other customers. i would rather wait on a table then take a to go order because people think that it is easier to take to go then to wait on a table. you hve to take the phone call, wait for the food to be done, check the food in the boxes, bag it up, put all the extras in it. it realy is more time consuming than people think.

No it is not necessary for take-out food. Tips are completely up to the person paying.
But for short services tips are definitely NOT needed.

Techincally they're doing a service for you by cooking and packaging up your food. So I would tip.
However, leaving a tip is never a REQUIREMENT (unless stated in a restaurant's policy) but it's really kind a rude if you don't.

I am a server. There is no etiquette for tipping on a take-out order. It's strictly your choice. It's also very appreciated. But, to be honest, it is not expected. Many times, the person taking your order and/or preparing it is paid a higher rate of pay (although not always) than a server. In Illinois, servers are paid a minium server wage of $3.90 and depend heavily on tips for their main source of income. So again, it's your option.
