sure, I would run back for my family or red dachshund, but I don't mean the living. I meant things kept on paper that harbor memories, like my wife's Bible that has the last letter her father wrote to her before he died of a heart attack, or the video tape of my children being born.

Oh it would have to be the photo albums. They chronicle my children's lives. There are so many things in this house I wouldn't want to lose, but I just can't lose my children. And though I know I would still have the memories of their childhood, I know that my memory will fade and I will need these pictures to help me recall times in our lives that were life altering.

I want to thank you for your suggestion of items. I know thing that I'm going to put a few letters from some special people INTO my photo albums instead of filing them elsewhere. So in case of a fire, I have but one thing to grab.

I won't be able to bear losing all of the books in my library, or the trinckets I've collected from around the world, or the artwork my children have done since they were toddlers (yes, I've saved every piece!)... but the pictures in the album will always serve to remind me.

Marshmallows. No, really.
On Labor Day 2002, I actually woke up with my house on fire. Grabbing my glasses off the nightstand, I jumped out the bedroom window with a flashlight in one hand and my cat in the other (this was the first floor, so it's not as dramatic as it sounds).

At the time, directions to my house were: take the paved road, to the gravel road, to the dirt road, and follow the two-track through the tree line. So being in the middle of nowhere, it took the fire department 45 minutes to get there.

Standing there watching everything go up in flames, I was amazingly unconcerned with my possessions. But the thought did enter my mind at one point that this was one hell of a bonfire. And it would be pretty damned cool to have some marshmallows to roast.

Money and most of our things can be replaced, so can most of our photos, since other families and friends do have photos of our family too. But, I'd like to save paintings that my children made for me when they were little. No other painting can replace their tiny hands smearing paint. I also have things that has been passed down to me from my great-great grandmother and it would be a shame if they have survived for this long and then disappear in a fire.

In order, it would be my passport, purse and laptop and maybe handphone (only if it was within my reach. I wouldn't really go all out to save it..hehe)

I am residing in another country so my pasport and purse serves as my identification if anything were to happen to me.

My laptop is where i keep all the infos on my PhD research..i dont think i can lose my draft and all i've been working for..even though i do have backup at the ofis.

of course one would think the photo albums because this is where your life happened. Albums are difficult because there are simply so many of them.
But realistically, it would be all my financial/family documentation. It would be a nightmare trying to figure out the accounts etc....

Of course the ideal would be to have both of these items close at hand.

PS: I didn't know you had a dachshund! :)

Not a damned thing, it's all replaceable. I hold everything that counts in my heart & wouldn't risk my life to save an object.

well since my photo albums are not easy accessible for me, i guess i would have to say my prosthetic leg and crutches, of course i will be in my wheelchair.

if i can't get to my prosthetic leg i guess my hand bag with all my credentials in it.

otherwise i guess nothing since things can be replaced.
