A front loading machine can be filled much more full than a top load machine. Your user's manual should tell you how to tell. I wouldn't "pack" it full, but I probably would fill it up.

Just like a top load washer, there has to be enough space for the clothing or comforter to move about in the water to agitate and beat out the dirt.

If you pack the washer too tightly, there is no room for movement and your clothing won't wash clean. The clothes near the outside of the drum will get wet and the ones inside may even still be dry.

I have a Whirlpool front loader, and I load it no more than 2/3 full, less if the clothes are really dirty.

have a 2002 sears kenmore front load washer that takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to wash. Is this normal?

Congratulations on getting an energy efficient machine! They do perform better when "full" but common sense must must prevail. If the cleaning water can't circulate through the clothes they may be wet, but are they clean? It will clean your comforter but you don't have to wear it to work.

I have a front load and it seems okay to pack it till it is pretty full.
