I live in southern CA as well. I worked for Petsmart for two years. Occasionally people would drop fish off (too many babies, moving or what not) that they did not want. I reccommend calling all the pet stores (Petsmart, Petco) and even the small fish stores and ask if they have any fish that are adoptable. You might find some that way.
You can prob also leave your name and number at your local pet store and just tell them you are interested and if anyone wants to get rid of some to call you back. They don't always take fish from people because there isn't a lot of room. So if they know you will come and get the fish they'll take them from the people dropping them off.
People actually try to get rid of fish a lot. They don't want to flush them or kill them.
Another place to look is Craigslist, in the free section. Many times I have seen people who are moving out or state or into small apartments offering their whole tank , fish and all , free to someone who can care for them.
That website is: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/
(Under the SALES section is a a FREE section, click that)
You can even make a WANTED ad on that site for fish that people no longer want. It's all free.
Just make sure you only get fish that get along!
PS: I think it's great your wanting to adopt fish. Thats awesome. There really are a lot of unwanted fish out there. I have a 60 gallon tank full of many mollies, even some full grown, a lady had living in a 5 gallon tank. Theya re beautiful healthy fish and I'm glad I got them free and gave them some room to grow.

Your betta will be fine in the cup for a little while longer, don't worry! For a happy healthy betta, you need at least 2.5 gallons. Though bettas can live in much less, they cannot thrive in less. (You could live in a closet but you certainly wouldn't be happy) 2.5 gallons is also the smallest acceptable tank size to heat. Bettas are tropical fish and need a constant water temperature of about 78*F. This will greatly help prevent diseases and keep your fish from becoming lethargic. Unless you want to do water changes almost every day, you are going to need a filter. The filter needs to be pretty gentle, or the current will catch your bettas fins like wind catching a kite. Sponge filters are excellent, but any filter can work. To help slow down the current tie some panty hose (or something of similar material) to where the water comes out. And even though you have a filter, you still need to do 20% water changes every week. Bottled water works O.K but its rather expensive, and you would have to make sure you never change brands.Tap water has minerals that are beneficial to the fish. You can pick up some dechlorinator for dirt cheap. This rids of any harmful chemicals in the water. The super oxygenated water at the store is just a way to make money and completely unnecessary. Besides, bettas breathe air from the surface! As for plants.. your new buddy will love a plant! They originate from rice paddies, so the more plants the merrier! Just be sure to use silk or real plants, as plastic can tear their fins. Good luck and thank you for taking the time to make sure your betta lives a long happy life :)

Adopt a fish ??? As silly as this question seems ( I don't mean to be unkind but fish are usually in pet stores) there is probably someone or some site for pet finder. Or maybe someone needs to get rid of their fish because they can't care for them anymore, check local newspaper. Good Lock, Ricki

I think your question is fantastic despite some of they negative & narrowminded comments I have heard in reply.....
I for one am trying to adopt out my pleco, because the petstore that sold it to me with my 5 gallon tank was a horrible idea and I was ignorant not realizing that pleco's grow up to around a foot!
So definitly make sure you do all your research. :)
Petco says their policy is not to accept the fish back unless its within the15 days of purchase. I passed that time and am venting........sorry, but good luck...

I don't think most people value the life of a fish enough to have a rescue group for them. The only "fishy rescues" I've heard of were people taking overgrown koi and goldfish for their pond, or people taking large cichlids or pacus.
If you want to rescue a fish, get a feeder fish and prevent it from being eaten alive.

I TOTALLY ADMIT MY IGNORANCE ON THE LAST COMMENT I LEFT. I was being sarcastic. I'm not really shouting just making sure that it's clear. I had no idea there were people who would not take care of or actually abandon their fish. My bad.

why do you want to do that? You could just go to any market and buy one.
