Personally, I'm going to have to say no. I think political debate these days serves no purpose other than providing each person a soapbox to unleash their views on the world -- especially now, in this "with us or against us" social climate.
Republicans will never see a Democrat's point of view, and vice versa. Each side always sees the other as irrational and completely wrong on every issue. Each side always accuses the other of being incapable of debate, with the irony being that true debate works both ways -- if you're incapable of hearing what the other side has to say, true debate does not happen. It quickly degenerates into the parrotting of talking points they heard from somewhere else.

I would say it would be a very boring world indeed if everyone thought and reacted to everything the same. This includes the political arena. It makes for interesting topics if you are well versed on both sides of the fence. If I want someone to understand me then I have to understand them as well. This is the point of conversation no matter what it is on. This will keep you from stagnating in your thoughts. Try looking from all angels and do research on your topics so you are well informed. Then have a debate. It is like the person who doesn't vote and condemns the political party in office. What right do they have to say a word if they are to lazy to vote?

About all the debates do is allow us to see which kind of a jerk each person is so we know which we want to vote for. I would be happy with anyone as long as they see things the way I do. Who cares which party. Not all republicans have the same view but just ran with that party.. Not all democrats have the same point of view but just run with that party. If you go with any other party you have to pay for it your self so you are forced to pick one party or the other. Or have a lot of money..

I do have friends who really aren't secure in their beliefs, they just repeat what they hear on tv and from their other friends all the time. These people are fun to challenge in political arguments because they don't know how to rebutal and usually end up agreeing with me. Problem is these people are this way because they don't put any thought into their beliefs, so I'm sure they forget about it by the next day anyway.

Sure, and Ive changed my mind as well. None of the liberal fools on this site could change my mind but I have some logical, rational friends that happen to be Democrats. We can listen to each other and reason. Another difference they have with the liberal fools on this site is they have facts. They don't answer every question with something intelligent like
"Its all Bush's fault mannn, he got us into this illegal war mannnn".

You are right, but that's a known fact.. if everyone agreed on everything then there wouldn't be a two party system. If everyone agreed on everything then where would political debates be.... if everyone agreed on everything, we wouldn't be living in America... that is the whole point of our political system

Maybe that's why in the book of etiquette it said never to discuss
religion, politics, race. It only ends up poorly.
I've never changed any ones mind and I've never changed my mind.
