Because people keep going to see them. Hollywood movies go in cycles. As soon as one type is a box office winner, other studios follow suit. That's why you have all of these Horror flix right now.

Totally agree. 10% of Hollywood movies these days are any good. But we in the U.K don't watch our own movies, and heaven forbid we watch a foreign language movie. Hollywood needs a renaissance, I can't remember the last good film I saw from Hollywood. But then I still watch pleanty of movies. Hence what reason do they have to supply quality if they're still getting my money. Untill cinemas start showing alternatives - whatever they may be. Can't wait for next action movie: with the loose cannon macho man who bosses everyone around and is extremely violent but in way that each situation justifies. Who also meets a girl halfway through and beats all the odds and wins the day. Ever see Arlington Road? Didn't follow Hollywood formula of the good guy winning. Very pertinent in these times too. The Grudge? Best horror movie forages because it didn't follow any Hollywood rules. I'm going on to much, but more variety would be appreciated, instead of the same story told in 7,000 different contexts.

Wow...where do I start.
Short answer: Money. Studios know that most movies earn 40% of its gross in it's opening weekend. So that is on mind during the films creation (speaking in big studio movie terms)
Long answer: Just like everything in the world, movie studios are populated by very unoriginal people. When 'Pulp Fiction' came out, look how many clones came out, we had a year where 2 volcano movies came out (Dante's Inferno and Volcano), another year when we had 2 asteroid movies (Deep Impact and Armageddon). Even in TV....how many 'Lost' clones have come out in the past 2 years? That and Hollywood is structured by ego-maniacs that surround themselves with YES men, how else would "Miss Congeniality 2" get made?
Money, as it usually does, ruins everything. Though it does serve to self regulate in that movies don't make bad movies on purpose (for the most part anyway).
In the end, it is all art. One man junk is another mans treasure...that is unless Carrot-Top is starring in it.

Because people keep watching them. The formulaic approach stinks, but seems reliable, which is why almost every movie now needs a love interest, car chase, and wise-cracking, plays by their own rules protagonist. It's all cliche, but Hollywood is more a business than an art venue.
The worst trend as of late is the reworking of old TV shows into movies.

For the DVD and television market.
Oh, do you mean the ones that get released into cinemas?
I Don't Know.
Realistically speaking, not every movie can be a great film, with an exceptional cast, fabulous direction, amazing characters, memorable soundtrack, perfect costumes and breathtaking cinematography.

The same reason that the record companies keep shoving the Jessica's and Ashlee's down our throats! People don't want to think for themselves, they want to be told who's hot and what's hot and they're led to believe that everyone is listening to this artist or seeing this movie or watching this show. Unfortunately, there's too many that fall for this marketing scheme and shell out their money for it which tells those in charge that we are monkeys who need our decisions made for us!

Because Hollywood and television in general is trying to appeal to lowest common denominator. Apparently it's working.
