I was reading about the Palestine-Israel conflict and the article I selected said that Truman was partially driven to create Israel because of the prospect of "wholesale defections from the Democratic Party." Wasn't Truman a Democrat? Why would he want people to defect from the party? I know this is a really ignorant question, but my knowledge of history is rather poor. Answers would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, you are right President Truman was a Democrat, one of the last good ones. He is turning over in his grave wondering what happened to his party. Enough said: JFK is also turning over. Got it? hope you understand.

What don't you understand? Many Jews were Democrats. That's why he mistakenly supported Israel's formation.
He DIDN'T want defections from HIS party.
