regained function and feeling to the hand in a year or so after surgery?

You can. Remember that it's the cell body that can't grow back, but cellular extensions (like the axon that runs from the nerve cell body to the muscles and sensation receptors) can and do grow back.

It may take a while for the nerves in question to find their homes, and you may never fully recover. But there's no reason that at least some function can't be recovered if the cuts were clean and the reattachment went well.

Don't expect the best, be prepared for the wost - but it may/should go pretty well in the end.

My mother did - she couldn't move her arm for quite some time but it slowly came back after about a year - it took her till the 3rd year to get it all back, but her thumb still wont function perfectly (almost 4 years now)

I am sorry if this wasn't the outlook you were hoping for - but I figured you wanted a realistic answer

Good Luck :)
