I’m working on a book, and I want some historical accuracy. ;) So, if anyone could tell me what a penny (and maybe a dollar) could buy in America during the years 1900-1910, I’d appreciate it. Also, how much would those items cost today? Thank you!

Check out this site. It calculates the value, in today's dollars, of a dollar in any year, from 1665 to 2005.

$0.01 in 1900 would be worth $0.23, in 2005

$1 in 1900 would be worth $23.13, in 2005

I found this cool link: http://www.lapl.org/resources/en/menu_collection.html

It is a search engine for the Los Angeles Public Libarary's archived restaurant menus for eateries in the Los Angeles area. I just used the date field, it goes back to the early 1900s. One restaurant had a porterhouse steak for $.90. WOW!

I would think a bag of candy, one of those little brown lunch bags sort of things.

My mum said her mum would tell her to go get a dollar's worth of beef to feed the family at the butcher's, that was in the early 30s tho.
