Emo- Rights of Spring, Shudder to Think, Jimmy Eat World (I'm not a big fan, but eh...)
Metal- Guns N' Roses, Black Sabbath, Metallica (And then you've got numetal bands like Korn... I dunno how metal fans regard numetal though)
Alternative- R.E.M., Violent Femmes, The Pixies (Alt rock crosses over a lot with the other genres you mentioned, especially punk)
Pop Punk- Ok, this is a touchy area for me. Most people would say Green Day or The Offspring. I disagree with that. To me, pop-punk is Generation X, The Talking Heads, The B-52s and The Ramones. That I know of, those are the ONLY decent examples of this genre.
Punk- The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Sham 69, the Adicts, The Stooges, MC5, The New York Dolls, X, The Distillers, The Dead Kennedys, Agent Orange, Bad Religion
