There are four main varieties of heating stoves on the market - corn, pellet, oil and traditional wood burning stoves. Your usage, size of home and storage facilities will really determine the best stove for your home. So, to give you the best ideas we will be reviewing the various stoves here:

Pellet Stoves
Pellet stoves are becoming more and more popular for three main reasons: they are environmentally friendly, extremely clean burning and very cost effective.

The pellets are made from sawdust and wood chips and at an average price of $150 a ton, for $450 a year you end up with enough pellets to heat the average home.

A pellet stove will automatically light the fire and burns according to the room temperature that you can set. Once the temperature is reached, the pellet stove will shut down and re-ignite when needed.

All you need to do is fill the hopper with pellets and set your desired temperature. The only job for you to do is remove the ash, however, this will only need doing once you've burned your way through one ton of pellets.

The main drawback of pellet stoves is the reliance on electricity to run the fans and pellet feeders. This will obviously have an impact on your electricity bill and perhaps more importantly for most people is that it also requires constant connection to the electrical grid - not much use during a power cut.

Corn Stoves
Corn stoves look like modern wood burning stoves and sell for around $2,000. They work by feeding dried corn kernels into a combustion chamber. The heat produced by burning the corn spreads by convection and will travel to other rooms. The effectiveness of which rather depends on how your home is laid out.

They don't require a chimney so have the advantage of fitting into any home and the fuel is cheap to buy. Plus, there is the advantage of the environmentally friendly benefits to make you feel like you are contributing to the protection of the environment. The emissions released through burning the corn are counteracted by the CO2 released through growing the corn.

They do require electricity to run though, which while cheap does cause concern for some people. Plus, you will get through a lot of corn. A 2,000 square-foot home can expect to use approximately four tons of corn over the winter months. That's a lot of corn to collect and store so careful thought is required before investing in a corn stove.

Wood Burning Stoves
There are so many different types of wood burning stoves available that the choice can be a bit overwhelming. They can also be somewhat expensive to buy and install and run, especially if you intend it to be a main source of heat for your home. It is always worth thinking about the safety aspect too, especially if you have young children around.

Before you go ahead and commit to buying a wood burning stove make sure that it meets any local air quality regulations. Some areas have quite strict regulations in place, so ensure you do your homework before purchasing your new stove.

However, having said that, wood burning stoves are a delight to look at and introduce a very cosy atmosphere to any room. They can also provide an effective heat source as long as you think carefully about minimising any unneccessary heat loss.
