Squirrels swim using a "dog paddle" motion, and their tail as a rudder. Swimming is very strenuous for a squirrel, and it's not done unless absolutely necessary

Can Squirrels Swim

I had a squirrel fall in my pool once. All he did was just float - he didn't swim, but he didn't drown either. He acted kinda like he was in shock from the water. After we flung him out of the pool, he was still petrified and didn't move, but he was fine after a few minutes. So i guess the answer is, they can float. Unless this was just a really dumb squirrel....

Yes they can. I saved on from a trash can 1/2 full of water, the poor little thing was just swimming in circles. Regards KG

all animals can swim ,that is incase it rains
other wise half of nature would be dead, after every heavy rain fall ,although a lot of birds are in trouble if they get stuck in the water, and they are not water birds .
although we had a chicken that was an orphan and grew up with some ducks ,and went into the water with the ducks ,she looked like a sinking galeon sitting very deep in the water ,but some how managed to swim with the ducks

only people appear to be helpless unless they have learned how to swim

I would say probably not. Maybe they can tread water for a bit, but I don't think they'd swim.
