It's going to be OK, young man. I'm a nurse and I've given lots of enemas over the years. Are you having tests or surgery that you need your bowels cleansed?
Really, try not to be embarassed. Us medical/nursing people don't think twice about giving an enema or any of the other 'stuff' we do to people. No one is going to make fun of you.
There are a few different types of enemas. Here's a general overview.
We do get you to take your pants/underwear off
You lay on your left side
A small nozzle is inserted in your bum. It is lubricated. It is only as wide around a finger. About 3-4 inches long. this doesn't hurt. DON'T tighten your bum to try to keep it out. We will put it where it needs to go and tightening your bum will not stop it, it will only make it hurt!!!!
Relax....breath slowly and deeply through your mouth. This helps relax the pelvic floor muscles.
When the fluid is put in, you will feel cramps just like when you have to poop. But don't push or try to poop! When the fluid is all in, the nozzle is removed. Then you tighten your bum to keep the fluid in. Try to wait however long you are told to, unless you find it too dificult to wait that long.
Go to bathroom and let it all out.
Sit for several minutes because sometimes there is a second wave.
Don't be worried. it'll be OK.

An enema can be either a horrible experience or at best a not too unpleasant one. It really depends on you and why you are getting the enema.
As for the "you" part. If you try to tense up or you deliberately try to keep from getting it in some way like that, then you are in for a very uncomfortable time. Squeezing your cheeks together will not stop the procedure from happening. With a lot of lubricant and more force from whomever is giving you the enema, the nozzle WILL go in, like it or not.
The best thing you can do is relax as much as possible during the insertion of the nozzle as well as taking in the fluid in your intestines. The more you relax, the easier the fluid flows into you to allow it to do what is required.
I know this might not be easy, especially if it is the first time and if someone you don't really know is giving you the enema.
Yes, you will have to take your clothes off from the waist down. This is to prevent any "accidents" from soiling your clothing and to make it easier for the enema to be administered.
You will be instructed to lay down, usually on your left side with your right knee drawn up toward your chest. This is considered the best position for easy insertion and for easy flow of the liquid going into your system.
Depending on why you are being given the enema, you will be given a specific type of solution as well as a specific amount. If it is just for constipation then about a quart of water with some castile soap in it will be all you need to take to have a good result and relieve the constipation so you will feel much better when it's over.
If it is for a medical exam, it would depend on the type of exam. You may be given a larger amout of water with castile soap so the you are cleaned out much deeper than would be necessary for constipation. The doctor needs to have a clear view as deep as possible.
Another type of medical procedure may require a second enema called a barium enema. After your first cleansing enema of soap and water, you would be given a second one that has barium in the solution that will show up clearly on an xray. After all the xrays are taken then you will be allowed to relieve yourself of the barium solution.
In this case you don't have to worry about losing the solution because they will use an inflatable nozzle that will prevent that. It's a small balloon on the end of the nozzle that is inflated to keep the nozzle from slipping out and works as a seal to keep the solution inside you until it's time to let it out.
After any enema, you will be allowed to expel the contents of your bowels in a bathroom in private. You should not be embarrassed by it because when it comes out, you just won't have any control of it due to the solution. It's like a real bad case of the runs. When it is all said and done, you will feel a whole lot better.
Good luck and be sure to RELAX.

You may feel some cramping and discomfort but it doesn't hurt. You need to take off the bottom half of your clothes at least but they may just have you undress completely and put a gown on. They will have you lay down on your left side. The purpose of the enema is to clean out your colon. Are you constipated or are you going to have a procedure done?

It doesn't hurt. It is uncomfortable. It feels like you have to go to the bathroom really bad. You will probably be put in a hosptial gown. Don't be embarrassed. You will have to relax. You will be lying down and then you will go to the restroom alone. Remember these nurses do this all the time.

Of course you have to take off your clothes. If you left them on you would mess all over them. You will have to lay down. I will let you find out the rest of it tomorrow.
