No, absolutely not! Nowadays god parents are only responsible for the spiritual growth of their god children. As a parent you can choose them to raise your children in the event of an unfortunate accident, however.

I'm a godparent, unfortunately it's not legally binding because the parents and I never had anything legal done about it. Such as in their will, or papers signed with an attorney. I'll tell you what though,if no other family member took responsibility, or they weren't able to contact anyone, I'd be the one to make any necessary decisions. And in certain cases, (depending on age), if the children wanted to live with me then say like other than the grandparents, I'm sure I would win a custody battle.
Wow....what an awful word...(battle), I really didn't mean to use that. But you know what I mean.
I hope everything is alright for whatever reason you asked this question. Most counties have free legal advice if you need to find out anything further..
Good luck !! !

Accepting the honour of being a Godparent means that should something happen to both parents, you will ensure that the children are taken care of. The parents may actually choose a different person to raise their child, but you would still be expected to be a large factor in the child's life. Typically though, the Godparent raises the children, if something tragic should happen to the parents. It is not something to take on lightly and the "rules" still apply just as they once did.

Yes and no. It all depends if the godparents are up to it and if family wants to step in. Usually the godparents are first in line. Then next of kin.

usually the immediate family gets the kids, parents, siblings, etc. If there is no other family, then the godparents get them.

This is a Christian thing, but basically this is church based and anything court based would override it, however if it is a legal godfather, then assuming that there is not other relative more capable, then the god father becomes the guardian.
