A bit of both ..learned and also lack of self esteem.
My thought is that maybe more women are jealous than men becasue many women are raised to believe that they measrue their worth by their man. Men often measure their worth by their jobs and accomplishments.

It is healthy to have a small bit of jealousy- or we wouldn;t be awear of things going on. It is a self preservation thing.
To extreem it is NOT good.

Jealousy is innate, from a biological point of view; everybody has an instinct to maximize his/her own offspring relative to others. Therefore it is undesirable for one's mate to also mate with another. This is also probably the biological reason that step-parents harm or kill children much more often than parents do. We like to think we know what we are doing, but sometimes we don't...
Instinctual jealousy is, like everything else, subject to extensive cultural, social, and personal modification. This is where the learned aspects come in.

Jealousy is innate- My granddaughter is only 1 1/2 and she's already jealous of any other baby that tries for her mom's attention and tries to push her away. It's prevelant in both sexes equally.

I think we teach it to each other by our actions. as far as male or female; my experience has been with guys. They are usually very jealous...I don't get jealous, I get even, personally.
