All "Explorers" of his time were guilty of murder, even genocide. They were all commissioned by their king/queen to find new land to exploit. Emphasis on the word EXPLOIT. It was a sign of the times, sadly.

Lots of great explorers murdered the locals along the way. Look at the history of the Spanish conquistadors. It's the winners who write history and they decide who was a great explorer or a strong leader and who was a genocidal barbarian. I'm not sure that he was a murderer because, at the time, the Christian world was in a constant state of war with the Muslims. Back then it was just considered taking the battle to another arena.

When vasco da gama made his voyages of discovery,he was rightly judged as a great explorer.In his time the end justified the means.Towards the end of the 15th century he was an explorer.Prior to this he was a warrior.What he did in the sevice of portugal and the holy roman empire, was his duty.In his time cruelty was a fact of life.If you were the wrong race, color or religion you received no mercy.

He explored past the tip of Africa and went farther than Bartholomeu Dias there he met an Arab pilot who helped him ccomplish his goal of finding a quicker way to China's trading posts than taking the long 3 year journey on the silk road which Marco Polo wrote about after returninf to his hometown of Venice which inspired Europeans to learn about china. Basically: He wanted a quicker way to Chinas trading posts
