A New York public school is requiring detention for parents who get their kids to school late.

Under the new rule at the Manhattan School for Children, parents who don't drop off their children by 8:25 a.m. have to pick up late slips from the principal's office and go to the auditorium to serve 20 minutes of detention with them.

i see how this could be a good thing. to hold the parent responsible for their kids. but what about the parents that have work and depend on someone else to take care of their kids. what about people with babies? do they have to wait there 20 minutes with a sick crying 1 year old? what about parents with multi kids that are late do one thing or another. would they have to serve 20 minutes for each kid that was late. i think this is a bad idea. i hope that the parents resign their kids from that school and go somewhere else.

Obviuosly the school must be having a problem with tardiness.

Parents must realize that they are setting a horrible example for their children (and their futures). Being on time is one of the easiest ways to get a leg up on success.

School is the kid's job and sometimes you have to teach the parents in order to reach the kids.

Okay, so if I'm running late and drop my kid off late, you want me to serve a detention that will make me even later for work? Screw that! I don't need a public school to shame me for being late by making me even late for work. Now there are issues with work. I think the school is way overstepping.

I didn't read the link. Around here, the parents can get a misdemeanor summons for criminal court if their underage(younger than 16 y.o.) children are late for school or skip school. It is usually about a hundred dollar fine.

It has to do with not disrupting the rest of the school or class, and parents are responsible for their minor children's actions.

I think its great. Hopefully it will have parents starting to take responsibility for getting their kids to school on time. The "alarm didn't go off" excuse only works so many times.

no, detention is going a bit far. you don't teach parents or kids by humiliating them.
