Wal Mart and Kmart are great for affordable items, but those items are usually of bad quality and most of it is made in China. In Target, everything I have bought from there has lasted much longer than things I've bought at other big box department stores and at Target they have more things that are Made in the USA and not in China (although most of it is still from China).

Target stores are also usually organized and cleaner. Even the employees are better. They seem much happier.

So ... why? What has Target done that Wal Mart and Kmart haven't?

well maybe Target is less profits driven, but they seem to not care about having the lowest prices, so they get more quality merchandise and as far as the employees go, they treat theirs better. Target has a union and good benefits (UNLIKE Wal-Mart and I don't know about K-Mart) so it makes the employees want to work harder and better because they are treated better.

I also know that K-mart is going through some financially difficult times and may become extinct soon so maybe they stopped trying.

I don't know exactly, in spite of my business degree. They have better BUYERS at Target, the house goods and furniture are more STYLISH and made of better materials yet only a little more expensive than KMart and Wal-Mart.

It LOOKS a little more like a nice department store and a little less like a big box warehouse. I suspect a higher percentage of floor space is devoted to high-markup items like jewelry and candy and electronics. This means convience and less savings for customers -- but!-- it also means Target can "take chances" on quality items to see if they sell. There's more wool clothing and better cotton clothing at Target. The toys are better quality. It's a better store to buy gifts.

On the other hand, nobody beats Wal-Mart for FOOD, over-the-counter drugstore products, paper goods and inexpensive computers, CDs and DVDs.

I have never seen a Target, but we do have Walmart and I think that we still have Kmart. For convenience I usually go to Holt Renfrew, so I am not that familiar with these stores. I guess that I'd have to agree with clcalifornia, so no further input is necessary.

Target doesn't try to have the lowest price. They are more quality driven and go after a more affluent customer.

Walmart tries to be the cheapest at the expense of quality. They also seem to have little regard for how their stores look.

We don't have a Target or Kmart, so I can't tell you what the difference would be (only have Walmart).

Target purchases quality merchandise, treat employees fairly and upholds a clean image. You pay for quality.

walmart treats its employees really unfairly and is awful. kmarts are usually filthy. target has good slurpees.
