i don't give homeless people money at all. chances are, they will use the money to buy drugs or alcohol. if they really want to get off the streets, then they will make it happen. there are many agencies ready and willing to help those in need. i work hard for my money, and they should too. i don't feel guilty either.

The one and only homeless guy I ended up giving most to did not ever ask me for money. He was trying to get his life back together and he was selling The Big Issue (some periodical) which I never bought but it never stopped him from smiling and saying hello to most people anyway.
I spent a good $200 in 3 months buying lunch for him whenever I eat in the area, and I always make sure he eats the same as me. If I can spend that money on myself, I can definitely spend it on him.
It doesn't stop the guilt though. =(

None.

The panhandler just treats you the same way we treat the world, as a means to an end. There's nothing humanizing about the interchange. They peddle guilt, and I have none for living in a world under the assumption of inequality and use-value. The alternatives are utopian or pure nihilism -- which will make any devotee homeless.

We shouldn't have to feel guilty in the most wealthy nation in the world! People should be fed and sheltered. I don't care if they are mentally ill, intoxicated, vets, etc. they need help from our governemnt that they are not getting. It is absolutely shameful. Just give what you can. But take the time to tell politicians and city leaders how you feel!

I was born into a poor family, and earn a below average income currently.

Regardless of how poor I am, I still donate cash/clothes to St. Vincent De Paul. If everyone thought like me, the world would be a better place.

It depends how you feel at the time. If I'm pissed off/in a rush then not much. If I'm happy and in love its possible I will go as high as a dollar.

It depends. Are you talking about someone you see often, or someone who comes up to you in a parking lot? Or something else?
