It is definitly based on a true story, the life of a man Ed Gein, one of the most notorious murderers in U.S. history. Like the man in the film, gein was killing people especially women and then wear their faces, all these bizarre stuffs in the house in the film were copied from the stuff in the house of Gein. just that gein used a gun instead of the saw to kill. well after when the victims are dead, he probably used these stuff. If u are interested about his life and all the things he really did, u can view that at wikipedia. There almost 3 or 4 films entitled the texas chainsaw massacre with the first in 1974 of Tobe Hooper.

Reality check! THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A CHAINSAW MASSACRE FAMILY! Tobe Hooper, the man who wrote and directed the dang movie, made it mostly all up. He read a fascinating story about Ed Gein and thought it was cool for a killer to wear people's skin as a mask. But there was never a family of it being related. And Wolf Creek is also an urban legend myth. Think about it. Even in the movie, if it were true, there would not be any witnesses to tell what would have happened.
And if you do not believe me, get the special edition version of Chainsaw Massacre 2000 or even the old original and on the special features you can hear Tobe himself in his own words disclaiming the truth of its reality.
And no, there has never been a family that Psycho and some weird hotel thing as based upon. Please do not believe the hype! It is all fake and it is all for screams and giggles.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho are both based on the same TRUE story. A family owned a hotel and when people stayed there they would kill them, one of the sons kept his dead mothers body stuffed--just like in Psycho. And one of the sons cut up the victims and ate them--Just like in Texas Chainsaw. The two stories tell part of an actually series of events. The family was into incest, so the younger brother, Norman from Psycho, was the older brother's, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw, son.

Ok listen.
I don t know ALL of the details but from what i've been told over the years (the original not the sequels) is based on events that happened in Minnisota or a state near it. I dont know what all went on in the ordeal but it inspired the movie.

No, no no. The only part that has any real basis to it is that the leatherface character has parts of his character based on the real life eddie gein. so did norman bates from psycho, and i think yet another character was based on eddie gein but i can't remember right now hon.

I saw a news story that it was based on events in a community. The Aussie version, Wolf Creek, is also a true story.

I just saw the new one yesterday. The guy I went with says it was based on true events back then, but no one can really say for sure. I think it's an urban legend.

no, there are murders all over, some even with chainsaws,
but the movie has gone so far off the deep edge that it really has nothing to do with any particular murders
