You can "call in sick" for office parties, when you don't want to go. That way, you don't have to say no... and they weren't paying you anyway, so you have nothing to lose. Act like you are REALLY looking forward to it!! Then, when the big night rolls around, you call and say you have JUST come down with something. You are really SORRY because you had this terrific Marie Antoinette costume rented and EVERYTHING... but you had your mother/spouse/friend take it back (in case they decide somebody else could use it).
