cichlids should only be with other cichlids like them...gouramis need a lot of space if you have more than one, tiger barbs can be aggressive if not kept in large groups...Do research on what you want before you go to the fish store so you won't have problems.

all fish dont get along with some kind of fish. You need to get ones that do go together. Take a list of fish you have to the pet store and ask if the fish you are looking at will be ok with the ones you have. Like bettas do fine with tetras but if you put it with a swordtail they will fight but you can put a tetra with a sword tail and they are fine. It depends on the combination you already have.

Don't put Betas together. There is a fish compatibility charts because there are many different compatibilities. I'm assuming you're just doing a fresh water http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/fwcompatibility_chart.cfm
Here's saltwater....http://www.tropicalfishstore.com/compatibility.htm

When you go to the fish store - look for fish labled 'community fish' - they are peaceful with any fish in the tank.

Ciclids and other semi-aggressive fish are usually labeled as such at the fish store.
