is it bad if a page is encrypted? why are they and what happens if they are not?

Its not a bad thing. Websites often encrypt certain areas to protect data such as usernames and passwords input by visitors. Another example would be sites dealing with secure payments.

If you're asking what encrypted means, think of it as scrambling the information between your browser and the website, so if someone is peeking at it, they can't read it.
