I'm borrowing a friend's lap top, an hp pavillion with h/k speakers built in. Nice but hmmm...no sound but the one 'error' beep, for everything including incoming e.mail.

Under settings/control panel/sound + audio devices, it confirms 'no audio device', (wha? the h/k speakers are fake?).

Can I fix this? Is some driver somewhere not switched on? Where? What?

Thanks in advance.

check your device manager in your control panel, most likely a question mark by your multimedia audio controller.
hp should provide the audio drivers at their web site.
hope this helps!

Go to the HP website and download the sound drivers for your specific laptop. Install them, and it should get the sound working.
