Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for proper brain function. They have helped many as an adjunct to medications, with depression. I suffer from bipolar disorder and my doctor recommends this suplement. Friends also suffering from Bipolar and Depression have had this suplement recommended.
The advantage of Omega-3 fatty acids is that they don't interfere with other medications (though I would definitely inform your doctor that you are planning on taking it, I'm not certain about reactions with MAOI's as many common foods are dangerous with this class of medications)
You can get Omega-3 fatty acids by eating fish that have these oils regularly. This won't get the dosage available in capsule form though. Below is a source that is highly recommended.

Try this book the A-Z of Nutrition it lists all the foods and their mineral properties, so it tells you what minerals are good for what condition ie cold sores, eczema, depression etc. Then it tells you what vitimans and minerals the body needs to have to avoid the condition you might suffer. It also lists the food that contain the highest amount of these minerals for example you might think milk has the most calcium when you read through Parmesan cheese has very high calcium. One thing it does tell you is that leafy green veges and omega rich fish are good for depression, ie salmon and veges ie twice a week would be a great start carbohydrates ie potatoes promote feelings of wellbeing and make you tired etc. I also agree with Tpar exercise is essential to feeling better start small and build up when you look fantastic you'll be wondering What depression? Make a commitment to yourself as they say "it's all about you" Good luck

If you want to try something natural, I took vitamin B6 for a while, before going on prescription ones, but may i suggest what worked BEST for me, exercise. If you truely want to feel better, getting regular exercise, even just 3 times a week will help produce more positive endorphines which is what makes you feel happier. Try it, it's better than taking any drugs or natural supplements and it's free :)

Harvard did some studies which showed that they helped some patients especially when medication was not very effective. I strongly urge you not to treat yourself for what can be a very serious condition. Seek a doctor or practitioner who is trained to use alternative therapies to help you in your quest for better health. Good luck and God bless.
