In this problem, the molar mass of a gas has a density of 3.1654 g/L at STP. So the molar mass is 70.905 g/mol. What is this element? I can't find it on the periodic table.

Your gas could be forming a molecule composed of several atoms. If the molar mass is 70.905 you need to try and divide the molar mass by integer number (2, 3, etc) thus assuming that your molecule will be X2, X3, etc.

70.905 / 2:
In this case Cl2 will fit very nice the value in the table.

70.905/3 will not fit a gas...etc.

why does the gas have to be an element? It could very well be a compound that has a molar mass of 70.905

in fact, Cl2 sounds like a very good answer
