prefer staying unmarried with their partners lifelong, even have babies, but don't want to be married. I fail to understand why! in my opinion, if you are married you have security. It is easier to break a no-string-attached relationship than a married relationship.

I was born and raised an American and have been married to an American for 20 years, in addition to the 3 years we were engaged, while I finished University. There isn't a single divorce or "no-strings-attached" relationship in our vast families. Added together there are more than 400 years worth of marriage.

This phenomenon is not unique to Americans. It has been more common in European, especially Scandinavian countries. However it is now an international phenomenon. People do it for various reasons - convenience, being unsure of the relationship, financial constraints, etc. Some relationships last longer than a lot of marriages and some dissolve after a brief period, just like marriages. Brittney Spears' marriage for a day is an example.

No. this is not true of "Americans". That is a generalization.
I am American. I married my partner first. We were married for four years before we had children.

There are some "people" who prefer a live-in relationship with their partners, without the formality of marriage. To assign this preference to "AMERICANS", is an unfair and gross over-generalization.

I'm American and prefer to be married than have a live in and have kids with him. There is reasons to not married (financial planning, business ownership, tax issues) but I see that its harder on the kids cause they see people split up all the time. It gives less security to the kids than the people involved in the relationship.

Wow. What a stereotype. I'll assume you're talking about US citizens and not Americans, because just about everyone in the western hemisphere can be called American. It's important not to believe everything you hear or see about other groups or cultures. Most will complain about the stereotypes they are subjected to and do a complete 360 when it comes to applying stereotypes to other groups. To answer your question, there is no real way to tell what Americans prefer without a massive poll, so I'd have to say, I really don't think so.

There are many reasons why couples don’t get married. Taxes and social security are just a couple of the reasons. If you are with the person you intend to spend the rest of your life with, why do you require a piece of paper to feel secure? I think the relationship just needs to make the couple in it happy and secure, with or without the papers.

The answer to this question is quite simple actually. People don't want to have to pay alimony when they divorce. They want a simple breakup instead of a long on-going divorce. We live in a throw away society...Everything is disposable including our marriage. Many people believe in making commitments to their partners, but they are not willing to make a lifetime commitment. A lifetime is just too long for some people. People change, and I have seen my share of divorces. I guess it is all personal opinion. I personally believe in marriage, and have been married for fourteen years.

well, marriage is just a blessing of union between a man and a woman...People nowadays don't value marriage at all. I agree with you about security but lately, it doesn't matter anymore because the world is getting very sinful...they lust to other people and eventually cheat. In other words, married or single but living together is now the same because they sleep with other partners anyway.....However, personally, I do not agree to this because I love my wife...we've been married for more than 12 years now!

That isn't really true in America. The majority of people get married. But it is true in places like Iceland and Europe. I say, whatever works for you is fine. No one should get married if they don't really want to. I like marriage just fine for myself, though.

security of marriage also brings a feeling of taken for granted for each other.. which may be some times dangerous...
