for a while you should dance to music on your own, and just feel relaxed....because really, no one's lookin at you so you just let lose and feel your body move. don't watch yourself in a mirror or a reflection because that inhibits you to move freely. next, listen to the beat and move to it. coordinate slowly your body with the rhythm and the beat...that is why feeling your body move in the first step is important. keep practicing! remember no one really laughs at someone who's trying.

I'm the same way. It took me a while to accept it, but I have realized that I will just never look good on the dance floor. What you will learn in dance school is specified sequences of moves. I took swing dance once and did OK, but there's a difference between doing something you've learned and just moving and looking good. Some people have it, some don't.
My solution is that I just don't dance unless I'm at a wedding. At a wedding, nobody really cares.

Borrow dance books from the library or ask someone who really knows how to dance. Dancing has techniques, and knowing these techniques can really help you. Being flexible helps too. Watch some MTVs with dance moves.
Dance in front of the mirror. You will see where you are awkward at and change accordingly. Don't feel embarrassed to express yourself through actions, because a dance filled with emotions is a good dance.

OK !! Get a broom and hold it, listen to a band, hear the beat, pounce the handle to the broom on the floor to what ever beat you hear, drum, all the other instruments, as you identify the instruments and their beat, with the broom,
Be sure you have a smile on your face!!!
You may need to do this for at least 2 weeks in a row every day. Then your feet, waist, shoulders, legs, head, hands will all be in tune with any beat you hear. You will then have the confidence to dance, as it is not what one looks like dancing it is having a beat that is your own and it makes you Happy to be moving to the music. You need to get the beat in your body. Then you can go on to other dance steps. Good luck and I'll have the first dance, please. I Love to dance to the beat of any music.

despite what other people say, i believe i hella suck at dancing too. i'm so uncoordinated it takes me 10 tries just to follow some simple moves to my workout videos.
every halloween i go to the clubs, and this year i want to be more prepared so lately i've been practicing whenever i can. i've downloaded a bunch of music videos, watched the girls who dance in it, and later try to copy their moves. not exactly of course, i dont wanna dance like britney spears waving my arm in front of my face, but getting the basic idea really helps. then i've played my own music real loud at home and tried dancing to the beat. its deffinately helped. you don't always have to dance to the beat. i've seen videos with slow paced music and people would dance a little faster. or the opposite. whatever you feel you can do, do it, and have fun doing it! if you think too much about what you're doing and what other people think, you're gonna stiffen up and look bad. if you're old enough, try taking a couple shots of liquor to loosen up. hope that all helps!

I once was exactly the same way. I became more outgoing, daring even. Now, I love dancing. Sure, moving to the beat of the music is a good start. Ever played the sims? It would be awesome if you danced like them.

Change is in yourself alone. More practice is what you need. Like me, at first I don't know how to dance. I have no idea when it comes to dancing. since I have the will to know how to dance, I just keep on practicing more and more and I don't mind what people are talking as long as I've tried. later I have discovered that I have a talent in dancing. Now, we have a group what we called dumanjuganon dancers. We dance folk dance, and other social dance like cha-cha, jive, rumba and others. So just keep on practicing. Good luck! i know you can do it.
