I think all of these programs were great. Some of them, particularly Social Security and some of Johnson's Great Society programs, have grown far beyond what they were ever designed to do.

Take Social Security. It was designed to be a safety net for retirees who had lost all their savings in the Depression or whose children (who would normally support their parents in their old age) had died in WWII. It was not supposed to pay out to everybody, only to those who could not afford their own retirements. We could save Social Security TODAY if we simply reduced benefits for people who have other income. This, however, offends some people's sensibilities, since everyone paid into it. Why should only the lazy, selfish people who refused to plan for their future get it?

On the other hand, why should Bill Gates get Social Security? He will, you know, when he's 65.

social security although brought to vote by FDRwas brought to him from a minnisota farmer and doctor to combat the depression, the farmer and doctors were a group of republican think tank of over 1000 members in i think 1934 or 5 ..check it out! and the civil rights bill would have been defeated if it weren't for the republican party ,kennedy didn't want to touch it due to southern senators and governors pressure! the unemployment falls with in the social security guidlines,,check it out!

All of these programs have done good things but like most government programs have done as much or more harm. They have all made people more reliant on the federal government to solve their problems with legislation and regulation instead of facing their problems themselves.

Good question.

If it weren't for the liberals these programs, which people take for granted, wouldn't exist.

There are so many more too!
