I've been playing clarinet and bass clarinet for 6 or 7 years now and would like to learn a brass. What instrument would you reccomend?
I don't really want to play tuba or trombone.

My little brother polays flute and used to have a trumpet (he never played it) and I used to muck around playing it. I had a friend that plays french horn and I've played that too, I'm just not really sure of where to go, or if another brass would be different.
The reason (and I should have said this before) that I don't want tuba is because I play bass clarinet (which I love) and have bass lines and stuff all the time. With bass clarinet, I have my clarinet and I still play other stuff when I practice and that kinda thing.

The school I'm at apparently has heaps of brass instruments. One of my friends mums had to do a stocktake and they have EVERYTHING (apparently). So I guess that getting ahold of the instrument is simple.

You should consider the trumpet. The armature is different than the woodwind instruments but the closest compatible would be the trumpet, possibly the french horn, but I suggest the trumpet. Many brass instruments have the same fingerings with slight adjustments in armature. Also, once you learn one of these instruments you will be able to easily transfer those skills to other brass instruments, i. e. baritone, tuba euphonium and french horn, coronet.
I started on coronet and then to trumpet then baritone and finally tuba.
Sax is not considered a brass instrument but a woodwind.

You want us to say trumpet, don't you? Well, I am a clarinet player who once tried to switch to brass, and I can tell you that it's not easy. Lips that are used to holding on to a woodwind mouthpiece don't seem to want to flibber the right way to play into a brass instrument mouthpiece.

i agree with the dude. i played clarinet for 5 years, and i used to fool around with my band buddies and we would try to play each others instruments, and its hard to switch to a brass after playing clarinet. if u want to switch to a different instrument though, switch to saxophone, because its different and has a different sound, and the way u blow your mouth is about the same. and for the idiots up there ^^^ who said sax was a brass, yall are stupid...

I don't recommend the french horn. It takes way to much breath to blow through one of those. The trumpet, though, was really fun.

When my daughter was in band, she played the euphonium. She was always first chair. It sounds pretty good.
French horn would also be a good choice.
